Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney reading

In Ohnuki-Tierney's article, Against 'Hybridity': Culture as Historical Processes, culture as historical processes and the notion of culture itself is analyzed. I think it is very interesting how rice has played such a huge role in Japanese cultural. The article discusses how rice and rice products are the single most important foods for commensality between human and deities. Today, the Japanese culture has continued in every day lives. "Rice is used as offerings in the family ancestral alcove and the only dish shared as opposed to other dishes which are kept in separate containers." A great example, stated in the article, of caring out the tradition of rice is during the nationwide New Year's celebration. "Rice wine and rice cakes are offered to deities and then shared among people." I also think it is interesting how the Japanese and the Westerners evolved into East versus West, or rice versus meat. The Japanese used rice to define themselves from the Chinese, who were defined as "foreign" rice.
